Three Saskatchewan athletes have recently helped Canada qualify for the Paris Paralympics in wheelchair basketball and Para rowing.
Regina’s Nik Goncin and Garrett Ostepchuk helped Canada punch their ticket to Paris on April 15, at the IWBF Men’s Repechage Tournament in Antibes, France.
The event brought together eight teams from around the world, with only the final four earning a berth for the Paralympics. Canada lost their three round robin games, but won when it counted, defeating Italy 72-60 in the crossover game and claiming their spot for Paris.
The roster announcement of who will represent the Canadian squad at the 2024 Paralympics is still to come.
Meanwhile, competing at the Continental Qualification Regatta in Rio de Janeiro at the end of March, Para rower Jacob Wasserman captured a silver medal in the PR1 Men’s Single category, while also earning Canada a quota spot in the event for the 2024 Paralympics.
Who will fill the quota spot and represent Canada at the Games is still to be determined, but the official announcement is expected in the next few months.
