Canada will open the WBSC Baseball America’s Olympic Qualifier on May 31 against Colombia with Saskatoon pitcher Dustin Molleken on the roster.
The eight-team tournament will take place in Palm Beach and St. Lucie, Florida. Canada is in Group B and will also face Cuba and Venezuela. Group A includes USA, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico. The top two teams in each group will advance to the Super Round.
The team with the best Super Round record will secure one of two remaining spots for the Tokyo Games. The runner-up and third-place team will have one more chance to qualify during the WBSC Final Baseball Qualifier in Taiwan from June 16-20. The winner of the tournament earns the final Olympic berth.
Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Israel have already qualified for the Games. Baseball is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2008. Canada competed in 2004 and 2008.
