It was a game of inches with Canada emerging victorious to seize gold in women’s wheelchair basketball at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games. In a back-and-forth battle that saw six lead changes, and the score tied ten times, the Canadians saved their best for last outscoring the USA by eight points in the fourth quarter to triumph 67-64 over their southern neighbour.
The game marked Canada’s sixth consecutive finals appearance at the tournament having won gold in 1999 and 2003, and silver in 2007, 2011, and 2015.
The Parapan Am tournament serves as the direct qualifier for wheelchair basketball to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Both Canada and the USA, along with Brazil, who won bronze in Lima, have qualified for next year’s Paralympic on the women’s side.
